The song reached No.1 in the UK, Germany, and the US Cashbox charts. It also topped the charts in Australia and peaked at No.2 in Switzerland and No.3 in Austria, Ireland, Norway, and Yugoslavia. In the US, it reached No.3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
It was certified Platinum in Australia (over 700,000 copies sold) and Silver in the UK (over 200,000 copies sold). It also reached the top 10 in many other countries.
